Valhalla Wilderness Society director Wayne McCrory, a professional bear biologist, has told a federal Environmental Assessment panel that proposed Prosperity Mine at Fish lake would push the rare dryland grizzly bear of the Chilcotin over the edge of extinction. The bears are provincially listed as "threatened". A study on the Chilcotin grizzly bears by the Craighead Environmental Research Institute, sponsored jointly by Friends of Nemiah Valley and the Valhalla Wilderness Society, says that the bears represent the largest residual dryland population left in the Coast Ranges foothills of western North America.
